Upcoming tablets

[Does anybody know if a Dell Streak can be used without a SIM card?]

Wall Street Journal has an article about upcoming tablets, amongst them one from RIM, the maker of the enormously popular Blackberry device. This tablet may be interesting for not running Android. Also not running Android will be the one from HP, who bought Palm earlier. I'll look forward to see what interface they come up with. (I'm a little bit tired of iOS's evenly ordered icons, which you can't change in size or anything.)

Let us see what choices we have for e-readers and tablets in a year's time. I hope just a couple of them are really good. It's really amazing that one can even say that, because with cars or cameras, most of them are pretty good. But it seems with this new field, most we have seen so far, with one or two exceptions, are slow and clumsy.

I tend to lump e-readers and tablets together. Maybe I shouldn't. I guess it's because for me, a tablet is mainly a reading device.

I bought a Dell Streak (USA) about a week ago, largely for use as an ebook reader. Android has a number of good apps for it; I have been using Aldiko, and am very pleased with it. It is able to import the custom ePub books I've produced from various sources online with no problems.

It's also a phone, music player, and web browser, and carries in a pants pocket fairly easy; I can do so much that I used to lug around a laptop for, but with a 220g device.

Thank you.
I've been curious about the Streak. Does it have wifi so one doesn't have to have a phone subscription?

It seems it does. But does it work without a SIM card?

You can get a Kindle app for it! Kewl. I think I'll take a closer look.

Funny...I was going to ask you, Eo, what made you choose this Dell Streak and happened to go to this posting and see why. :-)

And it only took 2 days to get to you, as well, hey? Cool! :-)

Yes, it came super-duper fast, refreshing after so many recent purchases which take just weeks and weeks.
One day. It was even delivered on a Saturday!

But then like I said, the price was a bit premium.

I heard good things about it, and I wanted an ereader smaller than the iPad, but with a better screen than the Kindle.

Now if I can just get the friggin software to download so I can *use* it as an ereader.

I'm not sure I like the sound of the buttons and whatnot that you described, though. I find it way annoying (as w/that durn Samsung Rumor touch I had, the other day) when things that you didn't want get activated just by a mere sideways glance at it, pretty near!

I'm gonna be chomping at the bit to see that new e-reader at Borders. I LIKE what I was seeing and hearing about that one.

Yeah...that would be nice! It all sounds a little "rough around the edges" to me! Personally, I don't think I would own a Dell...anything; but...who knows. Perhaps one of these days, I might end up eating crow! (HOPE not!) :-/
