eReaderJoy: thoughts and news from Eolake Stobblehouse about the wonderful new platform of tablets and e-reading devices. Some say, one of the biggest advances to reading since Gutenberg (Okay, I said that).
In e-form, books have never been wider, cheaper or faster available, easier to understand, use, and carry, or more comfortable to read.

Talk to Siri
An early indicator that we may have something in the new iPhone 4S voice interface is that everybody is already naturally using its name, Siri, as if they'd been doing it for years.
A less obvious feature of Siri is that the more you use it, the less you use Google. Apple will accumulate valuable personal data from Siri users that used to go to Google.
I am also for the first time interested in getting an iPhone. (In fact, pretty much a phone in general, as I gave away my last mobile phone in 1998.) And this is solely because of Siri!
(Seems to be an Aliens reference?)
Alien. Possibly Aliens too, but at some point in the quadrilogy they renamed the ship's on-board computer to “Father”, along with introducing many other mistakes to the story, like multiple monsters, etc.
Of course, apart from HAL and Mother, there are quite a few other fictional computers. Who knows, Siri may even know them all?
Siri, though, is not fictional. And it is accessible by mere mortals. This makes it completely unique. I stand by the prediction I made on the day of the 4S announcement that this will revolutionize the industry.

I suspected Siri might now HAL, but I wonder if she knows Mother? The question is tricky, for obvious reasons.

Ah, yeah.
If someone has iPhone 4S, please try “Do you know Mother?” And then qualify with “Mother of Nostromo”.

Excellent!
I've caved and ordered one. They say it'll arrive "between 19th and 26th October", very helpfully. :-)

So you just assume that all AIs know each other? That's so racist, maaaaan.
I agree that the single alien is a much stronger image than a whole swarm of them.

Would'na be the first time.
Have you read about Siri before it came to iPhone? I just wonder what exact data make you so certain that it's well beyond previous efforts.
